tithing (2022)

Beneath the weight of tradition, Tithing explores the intersection of faith, sacrifice, and societal expectation. Hannah’s collage juxtaposes religious iconography with symbols of wealth and obligation, highlighting the often unspoken tension between spiritual devotion and material demands.

The central imagery evokes the ritual of giving… a hand extended not in generosity, but in expectation. Surrounding this are fragments of religious architecture and currency, suggesting that the line between faith and commerce is often blurred. The use of illusion paper draws the viewer’s eye to these intersections, urging them to question what is truly being sacrificed and who ultimately benefits.

In Tithing, Hannah challenges viewers to consider the personal cost of societal obligations, particularly those imposed by religious and cultural institutions. The piece serves as both a critique and a reflection, asking whether true faith lies in giving or in the quiet rebellion of withholding.
