a harpist’s dilemma (2024)
This collage presents a haunting meditation on identity, choice, and inner conflict. A woman in historical dress sits poised, playing a harp while delicately holding two masks and a single rose in her hand. Yet, her face is absent, replaced by a swirling illusion paper spiral and a lit candle, symbols of transient identity and the flickering nature of self-awareness.
Two small demons hover close by, whispering unseen temptations, while another mask rests near her left hand, hinting at the endless array of personas one might adopt. At her feet, symbols of mortality, indulgence, and artistry… an open jewelry box, a skull atop an aged book, sheet music, a basin, lemons, and a doe’s head. All suggesting the complex interplay between life’s pleasures, its fleeting nature, and the masks we wear to navigate both.
Framed by luxurious red velvet curtains and an opulent chair, the scene evokes the theatricality of existence itself, where each choice becomes a performance and every mask a fragile identity. Hannah’s use of illusion paper calls the viewer to pay attention to the masks they hold, the demons they battle, and the fleeting light of their own existence.
