eyes wide broken (2024)
Eyes Wide Broken confronts the fragmented nature of perception, identity, and transformation. Hannah’s collage presents a figure whose very essence seems suspended between beauty and chaos, reality and illusion. In her right hand, she holds an inverted rose, its bloom replaced by the head of a statue with red, piercing eyes… a haunting echo of distorted ideals and imposed narratives.
From the figure’s right eye socket, a woman entwined with the serpentine body of a snake dangles precariously, symbolizing both temptation and entrapment. The left eye socket blooms with contradiction: a delicate hand offering a red flower, accompanied by a beetle (a reminder of mortality and decay) while the head of a Black woman, haloed in saintly light, emerges as a symbol of resilience and sanctity amidst societal fractures.
A wisp of illusion paper floats behind her like smoke, signaling Hannah’s invitation to pay attention… to the layers, to the unseen forces, and to the delicate balance between vision and blindness. Eyes Wide Broken challenges viewers to examine how they see, what they ignore, and the weight of the stories that inhabit our collective gaze.
