midsommar (2024)

Midsommar is Hannah’s reimagining of a collage by Max Walter Svanberg, transformed into a meditation on time, desire, and the fleeting nature of human connection. Set against a surreal, moonlit sea, the composition retains Svanberg’s dreamlike structure but is re-contextualized through Hannah’s lens, layering themes of impermanence and inevitability.

At the heart of the piece, two lovers lie entwined on a suspended bed, cradled within an elaborate framework adorned with moth wings, mechanical elements, and scattered timepieces. The moths (often drawn to light, even at their own peril) become symbols of attraction, consequence, and self-destruction. The ever-present clocks mark the relentless passage of time, reinforcing the tension between transient passion and looming impermanence.

A solitary figure reclines on a black swan, embodying indulgence and solitude in contrast to the intimacy at the center. The meticulous interplay of organic and mechanical imagery suggests both entrapment and transformation, questioning whether we control time or are merely carried along by it.

Through Midsommar, Hannah pays homage to Svanberg while infusing the work with her own perspective, inviting viewers to contemplate the ephemeral nature of love, memory, and existence. The piece lingers in the space between nostalgia and inevitability… an elegy to moments that dissolve before they can be grasped.
