hormone monstress (2024)

Hormone Monstress captures the raw, unrelenting physical and emotional intensity of womanhood, particularly the visceral experience of PMDD. Hannah repurposes a vintage portrait (an emblem of traditional femininity) and subverts it with a pulsating, psychedelic backdrop that radiates an almost unbearable frequency. The figure, poised and composed, becomes a vessel of barely contained tension, mirroring the way hormonal shifts can create a volatile, heightened state of being.

Her eyes, now stark black-and-white checker patterns, refuse to return your gaze or offer the warmth or predictability expected of a portrait like this. Instead, they distort perception, challenging the viewer to question what they see and what they assume. The piece embodies the paradox of appearing calm while turmoil rages beneath… a truth many women carry in silence.

Through Hormone Monstress, Hannah externalizes the often invisible, destabilizing force of PMDD, the unshakable rage, and the disorienting shifts between control and chaos. It is both a self-portrait and a challenge to societal expectations of femininity, forcing the viewer into the discomfort of its relentless energy.
