holy communion (2024)
Holy Communion challenges the sanctity of tradition by merging the sacred with the unsettling. Set within the grandeur of a Gothic cathedral, Hannah replaces the iconic stained glass window with illusion paper, signaling to the viewer: pay attention. This deliberate alteration fractures the expected, urging us to question the stability of the institutions we hold sacred.
A vintage hand, delicately poised yet gripping a loaded syringe, reaches through the window… an image both tender and jarring. The syringe, a symbol of intervention and control, contrasts sharply with the cathedral’s air of reverence, forcing a confrontation between faith and the often harsh realities of bodily autonomy, addiction, or medical intervention.
Hannah’s surrealist influences shine through in this piece, blending historical iconography with modern anxieties. Holy Communion becomes a meditation on the vulnerability of the human body within systems of power, be they religious, medical, or societal, and invites viewers to reflect on where true sanctity lies… in devotion, in defiance, or in the fragile space between.
