the revolving wheel (2024)
The Revolving Wheel examines the cyclical oppression of women throughout history, weaving together moments of persecution, judgment, and sorrow. Set against a swirling backdrop of illusion paper, Hannah calls on viewers to pay attention to the patterns that continue to repeat across time.
An old country church stands as a symbol of institutional power, while a woman on trial for witchcraft and the gallows behind her evoke the dark history of violence against women labeled as transgressive. A Quaker woman points directly at a hypnotic circle, drawing the viewer’s eye into an unsettling spiral that mirrors the repetitive cycles of control and fear.
In the foreground, the Virgin Mary weeps silently, embodying both sorrow and resilience, while a Grecian marble statue of a woman kneels and looks back at the scene… a witness to history’s injustices and an eternal reminder of the weight carried by women through time.
The Revolving Wheel challenges viewers to confront the enduring realities of oppression, while also inviting reflection on whether the wheel can ever be stopped… or if we are doomed to watch it turn, over and over again.
