busy signal (2021)

Busy Signal captures the relentless noise of modern communication and the disconnection that often accompanies constant connectivity. The central figure, adorned in vintage attire, sits poised and polished, yet her face is obscured by an analog reel, a symbol of outdated technology and cyclical narratives. She exists in a liminal space between past and present, reality and artifice, evoking a sense of timelessness that is both nostalgic and unsettling.

The sprawling rural landscape behind her contrasts sharply with the figure’s stylized appearance, highlighting the growing divide between human presence and natural existence. At her feet, vintage telephones (once tools of connection) now serve as relics, signifying the overwhelming burden of perpetual communication in the digital age.

Hannah’s surrealist influences are evident in the juxtaposition of scale and context, creating a dreamlike atmosphere that invites viewers to reflect on their own entanglement with technology. The piece challenges us to confront the paradox of a world where we are always “connected” yet often feel profoundly alone.

With Busy Signal, Hannah prompts a meditation on the unseen costs of constant accessibility, urging us to consider the spaces where silence has become a luxury and genuine connection a fleeting signal lost in the noise.
