the birth of television (2018)
The Birth of Television explores the convergence of technology, identity, and human emotion in a media-saturated world. While Hannah had long been grappling with these themes through drawing, painting, and photography, this piece marks her first official collage, created during art school… a pivotal moment in her artistic evolution.
A larger-than-life female figure emerges from the peak of a mountain, blending the organic with the synthetic. Her monumental presence mirrors the ways technology looms over and integrates into our everyday lives, shaping not only our environment but our very sense of self. Embedded within her form is a vintage television screen, an emblem of the broadcast era that forever altered reality as it is consumed and constructed. Beside her, a computer screen displays a status update, posing the question: How do you feel today? This seemingly simple prompt underscores the commodification of human emotion in the digital age, where feelings are curated, packaged, and displayed for consumption.
The figure, sourced from vintage Playboy magazines, critiques the historical objectification of women in media. Yet here, she is no longer a passive subject but a towering, undeniable presence… both shaped by and shaping the media landscape itself.
In The Birth of Television, Hannah prompts viewers to reflect on the ways technology mediates their sense of self, urging them to consider whether their emotions and identities are truly their own or merely reflections on a screen.
